For example I want to change the word ‘Votes’ to ‘Points’ on User page.

Edit ap.pot in poedit and save it as your default language. i.e. if your active language en_US, then new file name will be ap-en_US.pot

sorry do I save it as a .pot or .po file? I am trying to get it to work

.po and .mo

so I have ap-en_US.po, ap-en_US.mo which I have modified, then

do I keep the original ap.pot (or change to ap-en_US.pot?)

keep ap.pot, just save as new file name

It works!
