How does “Subscribe to a Question” work ?

I subscribed to a few questions on this website with the hope that I’ll get notifications whenever there are any updates to the question. I do get notified when a new answer is posted, however not the case with comments. Many comments have been added on the question, but I’m not getting notified.

Is that by design or a defect. Essentially trying to understand how subscription works.

Yes if you are subscribed to a question then you should get notification of new answers but not comments. So you can say its design to prevent sending lots of email.

Do I need to install email plugin to receive all notifications by email?

Yes, you need notification extension.
