I wasn’t sue why there was a 2 next to notification. After clicking on the link, I saw there were 2 notifications pending.

Separate the count with Square Brackets.

Example: Notification [2]

this is a css issue try to add the following to your css (your theme’s style.css or what ever css file included)

.ap-user-link-notification span.counter {
    background: rgb(255, 0, 0) none repeat scroll 0 0;
    border-radius: 10px;
    color: rgb(255, 255, 255);
    float: right;
    padding: 0 5px !important;
}
