Can users exclude by category?

I am using another community discussion plugin and we are getting a lot of participation but now creating a lot of disagreements among users.  Some don’t want to see posts about commercial promotion, some do.  Some don’t want to see discussion about politics, some do.

Is there some way, with your plugin, to create categories for each post and allows users to uncheck categories they don’t want to see?  For example, create a category called Commercial and each user that doesn’t want to see Commercial ads, to uncheck to filter out this category?
